Tannat? Why Not!
We fell in love with the Tannat (“tah-naht”) grape when Mark was the assistant winemaker at Bartholomew Winery. Bart Fawbush is one of the few winemakers in Washington State working with this deeply colored, intensely flavored grape.
Traditionally, Tannat is known for being powerfully tannic, especially in wines from southwest France and Uruguay. But Washington Tannat can show a different side: still structured and bold, but with tannins that are more polished and approachable.
Fast forward to 2024. We had the opportunity to purchase Tannat from the same Konnowac Vineyard block that Bart works with, and we couldn’t pass it up.
Our goal was to respect Tannat’s natural intensity while crafting a wine that is restrained, balanced, and ready to enjoy. The result is dark and bold, with brooding dark fruit, generous aromas, and a polished finish that makes it enjoyable now while still giving it room to age.
Decant it and you’ll find layers of blackberry, plum, and black currant, with hints of black licorice and toasted coconut. Drink it today or cellar it, if you can wait that long.
